Virginia BME Turns 50!

Virginia BME Turns 50!

This is the department’s 50th year. From this vantage point, it is stunning to look back to 1967, noting the advances in healthcare we‘ve witnessed and tracing this department’s rise to preeminence. I am proud to say that in fields like cardiovascular medicine, cancer treatment, and medical imaging, we have made important contributions to this progress.

We plan to use this anniversary, not only as an occasion to look back, but as an opportunity to introduce the UVA BME community to the directions we are taking moving forward. In research as well as in graduate and undergraduate education, we have launched exciting new initiatives that will only heighten our impact.

Over the next year, I plan to share with you—through monthly messages and newsletters—information about new hires, research themes, faculty startups, and new educational programs for our students. Our 50th-anniversary year will culminate in a symposium and celebration on November 2-3, 2017.

As you will learn, this is an exciting time for the department. You were part of our first 50 years. You can be part of our second by staying abreast of news from UVA BME and helping us celebrate this milestone!
