Great Careers Start Here: UVA Engineering Faculty Honored with Prestigious NSF Awards

UVA Engineering is celebrating three faculty members who have earned prestigious and selective National Science Foundation CAREER awards.

Assistant Professor Quanquan Gu

Assistant Professor Quanquan Gu

Quanquan Gu, an assistant professor with a joint appointment in the Computer Science and the Systems & Information Engineering departments, received his award for “Scaling up KnowledgeDiscovery in High-Dimensional Data via Nonconvex Statistical Optimization.” The abstract is available here. Gu’s research interests include statistical machine learning with a focus on developing robust, adaptive and efficient machine learning, data mining and optimization algorithms with provable guarantee to understand large-scale, dynamic, complex and heterogeneous data in social and information networks, neuroscience and genomics. Read more about his work here.

Assistant Professor Monda Zebarjadi

Assistant Professor Mona Zebarjadi

Mona Zebarjadi, an assistant professor with a joint appointment in the Electrical & Computer Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering departments, received her award for “Nonlinear Solid-State Thermal to Electrical Power Generators.” The abstract is available here. This follows a CAREER award she had already received through the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) Young Investigator Program. Read more about Zebarjadi’s work here.

Assistant Professor Gary Koenig

Assistant Professor Gary Koenig

Gary Koenig, Jr., an assistant professor in the Chemical Engineering Department, received his award for “Particle and Electrode Engineering of High Voltage Lithium-Ion Cathodes.” The abstract is available here. Koenig’s research group investigates the design of new materials and material chemistries, with a primary focus on rechargeable battery electrode materials. Read more about Koenig’s work here and here. Koenig also recently won a prestigious teaching award from the UVA Alumni Board of Trustees.
