Comprehensive Approach Attracts Women to Engineering at UVA

UVA is top among flagship public universities in the country for the percentage of women who earn engineering degrees, according to a Washington Post analysis of the federal Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. Thirty-two percent of UVA Engineering’s 2016-2017 undergraduate students are women. The Engineering Science degree program is 43 percent women, and Biomedical Engineering and Civil & Environmental Engineering have more than 40 percent women students.

Although there is more work to be done, UVA earns high marks from students for taking a broad approach to engineering education, with a focus on close collaboration with faculty and peers, hands-on learning opportunities, ethics and communications. The School emphasizes the societal benefits of world-class research. And students are encouraged to take advantage of courses outside the Engineering School.
